What to Back Up Before a Phone, MacBook or Laptop RepairA practical checklist for photos, authenticator apps, documents, browser data, passwords and cloud sync before handing over a device for repair.

Most ordinary hardware repairs are intended to preserve customer data, but no repairer can guarantee data on a faulty device. A backup is especially important before software work, storage work, liquid-damage diagnosis or any repair where the device is already unstable.

Back up irreplaceable photos and documents first

Verify that important photos, videos and documents exist somewhere other than the device. Do not assume a cloud icon means the latest copy has completed uploading. Check from another device or browser where possible before erasing or resetting anything.

Remember authenticator apps and account recovery

Two-factor authentication apps, passkeys and locally stored recovery codes can be harder to replace than ordinary files. Confirm that important accounts have a recovery method before a major phone or computer repair. Keep passwords private and use the repair intake process if temporary access is genuinely needed.

Computers may hold local desktop and application data

Desktop folders, downloads, email archives, browser profiles and specialist software can live outside the folders a customer normally thinks of as “documents.” A full backup strategy should reflect how the computer is actually used, especially for business or study work.

If the device is already unstable, stop experimenting

A failing drive, liquid-damaged board or phone trapped in a boot loop can become worse with repeated updates, restores and forced restarts. When the only copy of important data is at risk, recovery strategy should take priority over ordinary troubleshooting.

Important

This guide is general information, not a remote diagnosis. Stop using a device that is swollen, smoking, hissing, excessively hot or otherwise unsafe.

Page-specific answers

Questions about what to back up before a phone, macbook or laptop repair

If your question is not here, call, email or message the team.

Contact us
Will a normal screen or battery repair erase my data?

It is not intended to, but faulty devices can fail unpredictably, so a current backup is still recommended.

Should I give my passcode in a WhatsApp message?

No. Do not send passcodes or passwords in ordinary enquiry messages. Agree a controlled method only if access is necessary for specific testing.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Walk-ins are welcome at Union Street and Gloucester Road. Booking helps the team prepare and gives you a preferred time.

Is the selected time guaranteed?

The website records a preferred slot. The team confirms availability after checking the fault, parts and workshop capacity.

What warranty applies?

Eligible repairs include the warranty stated on the booking or invoice for the fitted part and related technical fault. New impact, liquid damage and unrelated faults are excluded.

Will I lose my data?

Most hardware repairs do not intentionally erase data, but data can never be guaranteed on a faulty device. Back up important information whenever possible.

Before you decide

The questions worth answering before a repair

A better repair decision starts with the right information, not just a price.

Understand the quote

A useful quote explains the known work, part choice and what could still change after diagnosis. Extra work should not be added without authorisation.
