Device repair terms explained in plain English

Repair quotes can contain words such as OLED, digitiser, flex cable, logic board, charging IC, microsoldering, DC jack, SSD and thermal throttling. The glossary explains what those terms mean and why they can change a repair decision.

The purpose is not to turn customers into technicians. It is to make a quote easier to understand and help you ask useful questions about the failed part, repair method, data risk, testing and warranty.

Technical language should support a decision, not hide it

When a repairer uses a specialist term, the customer should still understand what failed, what work is proposed, what can change the price and what result is realistically expected.

Clear authorisation and realistic timing

Online times and initial estimates help planning but remain provisional until the device, required part and current workload are checked. Material additional work should be approved before the agreed scope or total is increased.

Aftercare and repair records

Keep the booking reference and invoice, test the relevant functions promptly and follow any care advice. If a related problem returns, contact the shop before another party opens or alters the device so the applicable warranty can be assessed.

OLED

Organic Light-Emitting Diode display. Each pixel creates its own light, allowing deep blacks and high contrast. Many premium phones use OLED, and replacement technology can affect brightness, colour, thickness and power use.

LCD

Liquid Crystal Display. A backlight shines through liquid-crystal layers to create the image. LCD remains common on laptops, tablets and some phones, and can also exist as a lower-cost compatible option for devices originally built with another display technology.

Digitiser

The touch-sensing layer that detects fingers or a stylus. On many modern devices it is bonded into the display assembly, so a touch fault may require replacement of the complete screen rather than one separate layer.

Flex cable

A thin flexible printed cable connecting components such as screens, buttons, cameras, charging ports and trackpads to the main board. Tears, crushed sections and damaged connectors can create intermittent faults.

Logic board / motherboard

The main circuit board carrying processors, memory, power circuits and device controllers. A board fault may require electrical diagnosis and component-level work rather than replacement of an external module.

Microsoldering

Component-level soldering performed under magnification on small electronic pads, connectors and circuits. It can be used for damaged ports, broken board pads, power circuits and data-critical board faults where replacing a whole board is not the best route.

Charging IC / power-management circuit

Electronic controllers that regulate or negotiate incoming power and distribute it safely. A device can have a physically good charging port yet still fail to charge because the fault is deeper in the power path.

USB-C Power Delivery (PD)

A charging standard where the charger and device communicate before higher voltage or current is supplied. Cable quality, port condition and controller faults can affect charging even when the USB-C connector still handles basic data.

DC jack

The dedicated power socket used on many laptops with barrel-style chargers. A loose jack can involve the socket itself, a cable harness, solder joints or the motherboard input circuit.

SSD

Solid-state storage used for the operating system and files. SSDs are faster than mechanical hard drives but can still fail. On many modern devices storage is soldered or encrypted in ways that make data recovery dependent on the original board.

Corrosion

Chemical damage that develops when moisture and contamination react with metal conductors. It can continue after the outside of a device feels dry and can create delayed or intermittent electrical faults.

Thermal throttling

Automatic performance reduction used to control temperature. If a laptop or phone repeatedly overheats, it may slow itself down or shut off. The cause can involve workload, airflow, fans, batteries, charging or board-level faults.
